Hi everyone. You know when you get the creeping realisation that something is not quite right? Well, ever since being dignosed with ra 2 years ago Ive had pain in some of my tendons. Especially in my thighs. Some days I cant lift my legs properly. I was told by a rheummy nurse that this was due to ra in my hips. Always thought it was strange as when Ive had hip pain, its been directly on my hips. Also, for months now Ive had a burning sensation on my hands and feet. I woke up Wednesday morning (after having a steroid infusion Monday) feeling like I had the flu. I just hurt all over, especially in my chest and neck and back, it hurt to touch and my tendons in my arms and legs were sore too. I just felt totally devoid of all energy. Anyway, I thought it was strange having just had the infusion so had a wander through the internet and realised that these symptoms = fybromyalgia. What does everyone think and can you have ra and fybro too? If so, what sort of treatment is there?

Hope you are all well,

Love Heather xxxx

Hi Heather,

I have both! The pain I get in my hips is on the outside of my hips and apparently when you have RA in your hips it feels like a pain in your groin! The tendon on the outside of the hip stretches around the hip and into the legs so you not being able to life your legs may be a tendon problem but you'll have to see your rheumy nurse of consultant to diagnose it properly as it might be a different pain or tendon from mine. I'm not an expert on my own symptoms let alone anyone else's but it sounds very much like my Fibro pain.

The fluey feeling (in my opinion) sounds like a RA flare up. Fibro was explained to me to be a kind of secondary condition to RA. If you have been diagnosed with Fibro and nothing else then its unlikely that you'll develop RA. But if you have RA then Fibro can come along and hit you with another condition!

My Fibro was diagnosed because I have fatigue and even though my RA is under control I'm still in pain. Also when I looked it up on the internet I saw that many of my other problems (Migraines, tiredness and menstrual pain - I had a hysterectomy when I was 31) are all linked! The Fibromyalgia website is very informative as is NRAS.

Good luck - You are not alone!

Hi Heather

Yes it is quite common to have both RA and fibromyalgia; auto -immune diseases do like to accompany one another! The symptoms you describe do suggest Fibro but equally they could be due to the RA. Sometimes overlaps can make it very difficult to distinguish one problem from another. I asked my GP some years ago whether I might have Fibro, his response, very probably, but do you want another tag?! I believe the treatments are one and the same for the main part.

I do think when we suffer joint pain/damage it can have a knock on effect for ligaments, tendons, muscles etc. so some generalised pain is to be expected. There are no diagnostic blood test available for Fibro but a rheumatologist will assess pain levels and tender points to reach a conclusion. Perhaps worth mentioning at your next rheumatology appointment. In the meantime adequate pain management might be the way forward to provide some relief; your GP should be able to organise this.

The 'hip' pain may be due to trochanteric bursitis caused by the RA. This makes moving the legs very difficult but can be helped by physio and steroid injection into the bursa. Again this is quite common and may be worth asking about.

Good luck!

Hi Heather, I have fibromyalgia too. As Lyn says its quite common to have both (unfortunately!!) and its hard to tell which is which.
Regarding the lifting legs problems, I have this too, but no idea of the cause of that.
You could as your rheumatologist when you see him/her next, they will check for the tender points. An overlap is quite common too, and thats why its hard to differentiate. The hip pain again can just be tendon problems etc. Apparantly I have something called a trachanter bursa and need physio.
I hope you feel better soon. Smile

Hi all, thanks for the replies. Im seeing my rheummy nurse in a couple of weeks so will speak to her then. My GP thought it could be fibro but has ordered a blood test for vitamin b12 deficiency which apparently can cause similar symptoms.

Keep well all
